About us

The “DeFacto — more than opinions” web platform makes the expertise and results of research in political science and other social sciences accessible to a wider audience.

Various types of contribution will be published on DeFacto, such as simplified versions of articles published in scientific journals or books, summaries of research reports, and analyses and commentaries produced exclusively for this platform. Advanced students will also be able to present the results of their academic work. The articles will be published mainly in French, German and Italian. The articles will be short and concise, with a clear indication of the methods and theories on which they are based.

DeFacto was created by Sarah Bütikofer, Fabrizio Gilardi and Georg Lutz. The launch of the DeFacto platform was funded from 2015 for an initial two-year phase by the Swiss National Science Foundation, as part of the Agora programme. The continuation of the project in 2017 and 2018 was funded by the Institute of Political Science of the University of Zurich, the Institute of Political Science of the University of Bern, the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS), the Department of Humanities and Social and Political Sciences of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, as well as by FORS, the National Competence Centre for Social Sciences of the University of Lausanne.

Since 2019, the Centre for Democracy in Aarau (ZDA) and the Graduate Institute of Public Administration (IDHEAP) have also contributed to funding the platform, and since 2020 the Department of Political Science at the University of Basel, the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Geneva, the Institute of Political Studies at the University of Lausanne, the Institute of Political Science at the University of Lucerne and the Department of Political Science at the University of St. Gallen. At its annual meeting in February 2020, the Swiss Political Science Association (SPSA) decided to take over sponsorship of DeFacto and also to contribute to its funding. In 2021, nccr on the move joined the circle of institutions that financially support DeFacto.

The platform is managed by an editorial team and supported by an editorial board. The delegates on the editorial board have strategic responsibility for the platform.
